Billie Jean King Cup 2024 Qualifiers: Australia beat Mexico to qualify for Finals

The Australian women’s tennis team completed a 4-0 victory over Mexico in the Billie Jean King Cup 2024 Qualifiers after teenager Taylah Preston and the doubles pair of Ellen Perez and Daria Saville won their matches in Brisbane on Saturday.

With this win, Australia qualified for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals for the fourth consecutive time. They will join defending champions Canada, 2023 runners-up Italy, Czechia and Spain in the 12-team Finals to be played in November.

Playing at the Queensland Tennis Centre on her Billie Jean King Cup debut, the 18-year-old Preston beat Marcela Zacarias 6-1, 6-1 in one hour and six minutes to give Australia an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match tie.

Saville and Perez, up against Fernanda Contreras and Maria Fernanda Navarro, secured a 4-0 result for the Australian women’s tennis team with a 6-3, 6-1 win in one hour and two minutes.

On Friday, Arina Rodionova beat Giuliana Olmos 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in her first match for Australia in the BJK Cup after eight years. Saville replaced an injured Storm Hunter for the second rubber and beat Zacarias 6-1, 6-0.

The Australian tennis team also qualified for the Finals last year after finishing runners-up in 2022 but dropped down to this year’s Qualifiers from Group B.

Australia are seven-time BJK Cup champions but their last title came back in 1974. Sam Stosur, who was part of the Australian tennis team that reached the final in 2022, was the non-playing captain of the squad against Mexico.

Formerly known as the Fed Cup, the Billie Jean King Cup is one of the most prestigious international tennis events for women. It brings together top-ranked players from different countries to compete in a team format. The tournament is the women’s equivalent of the men’s only Davis Cup.
