FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2024: Australia teams enter quarter-finals

The Australian men’s and women’s basketball teams stormed into the quarter-finals of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup 2024 in Singapore after topping their respective pools on Saturday.

Playing at the Singapore Sports Hub, the Australian men’s team finished at the top of the Pool C points table with comfortable victories over Japan and the Philippines.

Australia, the top Asian team in the latest FIBA men’s 3×3 basketball rankings at world No. 5, eased past 26th-ranked Japan 20-13 in their opening group match. William Hickey top-scored for the Gangurrus with seven points while Todd Blanchfield and James Alexander O’Donnell pitched in with six each.

Blanchfield almost single-handedly took his team to victory in the second match against world No. 37 Philippines, scoring 13 points on his own in a 21-13 win.

The Australian men’s 3×3 basketball team will face Pool A runner-ups, the People’s Republic of China, in the quarters on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Australian women’s 3×3 basketball team was even more dominant than the men.

Ranked third in the FIBA women’s rankings, the Aussie women downed neighbours New Zealand, ranked 26th, 22-9 in their opening Pool D match. Lauren Mansfield top-scored with seven points.

World No. 79 India were also dispatched off swiftly, as Marena Whittle and Anneli Maley scored six points each to engineer a 21-7 victory.

Thailand, the Pool B runner-ups, will be the Gangurrus women’s opponents in the top eight.

With three titles each, Australia men and women are the most successful teams in the history of the FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup.
