High school football powerhouses to kick off season at Bank of America Stadium

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – High school football is returning to the home of the Carolina Panthers this fall.

The Panthers announced the slate for this year’s “Keep Pounding High School Classic,” featuring two games with local powerhouse programs in August.

The first matchup pits the Independence Patriots against the Myers Park Mustangs. Both schools have long been key players on the Charlotte-area gridiron, with each being perennial state playoff contenders.

The second leg of the high school doubleheader will see the Providence Day Chargers take on the Weddington Warriors, both of whom are coming off state titles in their respective divisions.

Games will be played on Aug. 22 at Bank of America Stadium, with the first game scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The later contest is set to get underway at 8 p.m.

“The Carolina Panthers are thrilled to kickoff the start of the high school football season with two high-powered matchups,” Panthers director of community relations Riley Fields said. “Anticipation will be high for this year’s Keep Pounding High School Classic and we are excited about the new doubleheader format.”

All four teams will be represented by celebrity captains who attended each of the schools. Independence will be presented by Hakeem Nicks, Myers Park by Captain Munnerlyn, Providence Day by Ikem Ekwonu and Weddington by Thomas Davis. Davis, Ekwonu and Munnerlyn all played for the Panthers, while Nicks won Super Bowl XLVI with the New York Giants.

General admission tickets for the doubleheader are $8 and go on sale Feb. 13 at noon through Ticketmaster.
