Jake Fraser-McGurk, Steve Smith set to miss T20 World Cup squad

Jake Fraser-McGurk, Australian cricket’s man of the moment, is set to miss out on selection for Australia’s Twenty20 World Cup squad.

The 22-year-old batter has had a sensational start to life in the IPL, producing three half-centuries in five matches to date, capped by Fraser-McGurk’s blistering 84 from just 27 balls in the Delhi Capitals’ victory over Mumbai on Saturday.

“Has there been a player that’s had a bigger impact in their first 5 games of IPL than Jake Fraser-McGurk?” former Australian captain Aaron Finch posted on X.

“3 scores above 50, striking over 200. The kid is a superstar!”

His form had fans clamouring for him to make the 15-man squad for June’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States.

But he is going to fall short, according to a report in CODE Sports.

“Having never played a T20 international and with just two one-dayers for Australia to his name, Fraser-McGurk would have needed to come from the clouds to make the squad,” the report states.

“However his stunning entrance into the (IPL) … had accelerated the public push towards his inclusion, with former Test skipper Tim Paine and ex-national selector Mark Waugh among those who had called for him to be named in the squad.

“But the panel of George Bailey, Tony Dodemaide and national coach Andrew McDonald will remain loyal to the group of players they had been priming for a tilt at an unprecedented triple crown of global men’s titles, with Australia having won the World Test Championship final and one-day World Cup last year.”

At the other end of the scale, veteran Steve Smith is also expected to miss selection for the tournament.

In what is tipped to be a squad with a wide variety of experience, wicketkeepers Matthew Wade and Josh Inglis are set to earn selection, along with spinners Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar and all-rounder Cam Green.

Despite being dropped for the Capitals, David Warner is expected to open the batting alongside Travis Head for Australia, with skipper Mitch Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Tim David among the batters slated for middle order positions.

The Aussies have been drawn in Group B with old foe England, alongside Namibia, Scotland and Oman.

Fraser-McGurk will seemingly need to bide his time before getting another opportunity in national colours, despite huge raps on him in the IPL.

“This guy is something else. His name is JFM,” commentator Sanjay Manjrekar said after his explosive innings on Saturday.

“We’ve got a sensation from Australia. He’s young and he’s very different.

“He thinks ‘maximum’ every ball … and lets his bat do the talking. It’s all hand-eye coordination.”
