(Greenfield) — Nodaway Valley senior Ashlyn Gutierrez will take her golf talents to the next level with Waldorf.
Gutierrez just picked up the sport of golf when she started high school, and through hard work, she has developed into a collegiate golfer.
“I kind of started looking before my junior season, and I started to reach out to coaches,” Gutierrez told KMA Sports. “This fall, I reached out to some more coaches and went on some visits.”
A private university in Forest City, Waldorf appealed to what Gutierrez was looking for in a school and a golf program.
“We had a call with (Waldorf head coach Mark Clouse), and I just really liked his coaching perspective,” Gutierrez said. “What he wants from his athletes. I went up for a visit, and I loved the atmosphere of the college campus. I met some of the girls, and I knew that is where I was going to go.”
Gutierrez has shaved over 15 strokes off her average since her freshman year and is excited for the opportunity to continue to grow and develop at the next level.
“I hadn’t even picked up a golf club until my freshman year,” she said. “It definitely wasn’t a thought in my mind to play college golf, but it became more of a goal my junior year. Over the summer, it became a dream to go play. I played Iowa Junior PGA this summer and definitely decided I wanted to play somewhere (in college) through talking with other girls that were doing it.”
